Mene: A fossil moonfish from Egypt sheds light on the evolution of modern marine fishes

The Mansoura University Vertebrate Paleontology Center (MUVP) co-led an international study published in *Geology*, revealing new evidence that marine fish communities thrived in Egypt during the Paleocene–Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM), a period of extreme global warming around 56 million years ago.

Based on fossils from the Ras Gharib A site in Egypt,

the study shows that diverse fish assemblages persisted in tropical waters despite temperatures that may have been near or above the limits tolerable for many modern marine species, providing important insights into how life responded to past climate change in the tropics.
