Qarmoutus hitanensis: An ancient catfish from Egypt sheds light on the evolution of modern catfishes

The Mansoura University Vertebrate Paleontology Center (MUVP) led a study describing *Qarmoutus hitanensis*, a new species of fossil catfish discovered in Egypt’s Fayum Depression.

Based on exceptionally preserved fossils dating to around 37 million years ago,

the study provides important insights into the early evolution of catfishes and highlights the rich diversity of freshwater ecosystems that once existed in Egypt during the Eocene Epoch.
